Can I have only a blood test without the MRI?

Yes, we offer standalone blood test packages that can be booked independently of an MRI. Learn more about our blood tests here.

Question 3

Can I bring my recent blood test results from another provider?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is possible include recent blood test results you've obtained from another provider (e.g., CARE).

It's generally advised that blood tests be recent (ideally not older than 3 months) to provide the most accurate current health information.

Question 4

Can I eat or drink on the day of my test?

Accepted Answer

If your check-up includes a blood test, we ask you to fast for 8–12 hours beforehand (no food or drinks other than water). This ensures accurate results for fasting glucose, insulin, and lipid markers.

Please make sure to stay well hydrated and drink 2–3 glasses of water before your appointment.

If you only booked an MRI without blood work, fasting is not required, but we still recommend staying hydrated. Avoid heavy exercise for 2 hours before the scan.

Question 5

Can Ahead replace my mammography?

Accepted Answer

No, the standard Ahead full-body MRI does not replace your guideline-recommended mammography. Our comprehensive MRI health analysis is a powerful tool for understanding your overall health and catching potential issues early, but it is meant to complement your routine preventive check-ups, not replace them.

That said, we offer a dedicated Mamma MRI as an add-on to our full-body MRI. A breast MRI is an advanced, highly sensitive imaging option that is more effective than a standard mammogram for specific groups, particularly women with a higher risk profile, dense breast tissue, or breast implants.

We recommend discussing your specific screening needs with our team or your treating doctor or gynecologist to determine if adding a Mamma MRI to your Ahead check-up is the right choice for you. You can also book a free advisory call to discuss.

Question 6

Do you work with employer programmes?

Whether the screening can be reimbursed through your employer depends on the agreements your company has in place. Some employers offer health programs or subsidies that may cover the Ahead screening.

Our most popular package, the Advanced, includes a 60-minute head-to-pelvis MRI scan plus an 81-biomarker blood panel covering cardiovascular, metabolic, thyroid, liver, kidney, immune, and nutritional markers. The Advanced package also includes gender-specific MRI sequences (prostate or endometrium/uterus) and body composition analysis.

You can extend your blood panel with add-ons like B-vitamins, Omega-3 & 6, or hormones for even broader coverage.

We analyze over 150 data points from your imaging and blood tests, using proprietary AI pipelines, and our Swiss board-certified physicians then craft a personalized action plan you can start implementing right away.

Question 8

What can the MRI detect regarding specific conditions or body parts?

Accepted Answer

Our Ahead Health check-up is a full-body preventive screening. It is not primarily designed for diagnosing acute symptoms or specific, pre-existing conditions that already have a diagnostic pathway. For those, you should consult your GP or a specialist.

Gallstones: We do not offer treatments like lithotripsy. While the gallbladder is scanned, a targeted diagnostic test is better for known gallstone issues.
Lyme Disease (Borreliose): Our scan is not a diagnostic test for Lyme disease; specialized blood tests via your GP are needed. However, our scan might pick up general inflammatory markers.
Fibromyalgia and ME/CFS: These are diagnosed clinically. Our scan is not specific for them but can help rule out other underlying physical causes for symptoms.
Colon Cancer: The scan may show potential signs but is not a definitive diagnostic tool like a colonoscopy. It generally does not detect colon polyps smaller than 5mm.
Lungs: The MRI may detect lung masses, nodules, and other chest abnormalities. For more detailed lung imaging, a low-dose CT can be arranged on request.
Gut Problems: Our MRI assesses major abdominal organs (liver, pancreas, kidneys, spleen, gallbladder) and can identify issues like tumors, fatty liver disease, or kidney stones. It also measures visceral fat. However, it is not designed for complex gut disorders requiring specialized bowel examination.

What organs and conditions does the Ahead scan primarily screen for?

Our comprehensive scan provides insights into:

Brain Health: Screens for aneurysms, MS plaques, and early signs of neurodegeneration (e.g., Alzheimer's, dementia) by assessing brain structure and vessels.
Cardiovascular Health: Assesses atherosclerosis risk and metabolic syndrome through markers like cholesterol, ApoB, hs-CRP, and imaging of visceral adipose tissue.
Metabolic Function: Checks for diabetes risk and metabolic syndrome via glucose, HbA1c, and fat indices.
Liver Function: May detect NAFLD (fatty liver), iron overload (hemochromatosis), and liver tumors through blood markers and quantitative liver imaging.
Kidney Function: Screens for chronic kidney disease (CKD), nephropathy, and kidney stones/cysts by analyzing blood markers and kidney size/volume.
Immune System & Inflammation: Monitors for chronic inflammation and immune dysregulation using CBC and hs-CRP, and spleen volume.

Women's Health: High-resolution pelvic MRI screens for conditions like endometriosis, PCOS, fibroids, and ovarian/endometrial cancer. Relevant hormone levels can be checked with the hormone panel.
Vitamins: May identify deficiencies (e.g., Vitamin D) with the Advanced blood test. Additional vitamins available via B-vitamin and other add-ons.
Body Composition: Quantifies visceral and subcutaneous fat volumes, muscle fat infiltration (PDFF), and muscle volumes.

What does the Pro package include that the Advanced doesn't?

Additional blood markers:

The Pro MRI scan takes longer (80 minutes vs. 60 minutes) because of the extended anatomical coverage. Both packages include a follow-up consultation with a physician, an interactive online report, and a personal action plan.

What's the difference between Core, Advanced, and Pro?

Question 13

Where do standalone blood tests take place?

Accepted Answer

Standalone blood tests (without an MRI) are available at several partner laboratories across Switzerland, including locations in Zurich, Horgen, Bern, St. Gallen, and Zug.

If you book a check-up package that includes both MRI and blood work, the blood draw takes place at the same clinic as your MRI scan.

Question 14

Which blood test should I book if I want all vitamins and minerals tested?

Accepted Answer

The Advanced blood test already covers a broad set of vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes: Vitamin D, Iron, Ferritin, Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium, and Phosphate. It's available standalone or as part of the Advanced and Pro packages.

For even wider coverage, you can add:

With the Pro package, B-vitamins are already included, so you'd only need the Omega add-on for wider coverage.

Additional vitamins and biomarkers beyond our standard panels can also be added on request. A few vitamins (A, C, E, K) and trace minerals are not part of our current panel; if you need these tested, your GP can order them separately.

Question 15

Do I need to fast before a blood test?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We recommend fasting for 8–12 hours before your blood draw (water is fine and encouraged). This ensures accurate results for fasting glucose, insulin, triglycerides, and other metabolic markers.

During the fasting period:

Drink 2–3 glasses of water to stay well hydrated (this also makes the blood draw easier)
Avoid food, coffee, tea, juice, and other beverages besides water
Continue taking any prescribed medications unless your doctor advises otherwise
Avoid intense exercise for 24 hours before the test

If you have a morning appointment, the easiest approach is to stop eating after dinner the night before and drink water in the morning.

If fasting isn't possible for medical reasons (e.g. diabetes), please let us know when booking and we'll advise on the best approach.

Question 16

What is the difference between your blood test and a standard GP blood test?

Accepted Answer

A standard GP blood test in Switzerland typically covers a basic panel: blood count, cholesterol, blood sugar, and sometimes liver and kidney values. It usually includes 10–15 markers and is ordered reactively when symptoms are present.

The Ahead Advanced blood test is a preventive screening panel with 81 biomarkers designed to catch early warning signs before symptoms appear. Key differences:

Broader scope: we include cardiovascular risk markers (ApoB, hs-CRP), metabolic health (HbA1c, HOMA-IR, Insulin), a full thyroid panel (TSH, fT3, fT4), and more, most of which are not part of a routine GP check.
Proactive approach: our panel is designed for preventive screening of healthy individuals, not diagnosis of existing symptoms.
Detailed reporting: your results come in an interactive online report with clear reference ranges, trend tracking, and personalized recommendations.
Physician review: every result is reviewed by a physician who can explain findings and suggest next steps. A follow-up consultation is included with check-up packages.
Optional add-ons: you can extend your panel with hormones (women) / hormones (men), B-vitamins, or Omega-3 & 6.

Question 17

Can I get just a head MRI without the full body scan?

Accepted Answer

Our MRI is designed as a full-body screening that includes the head (brain) as standard. We don't currently offer a standalone head-only MRI.

All packages (Core, Advanced, Pro) include a brain scan as part of the full-body MRI. If you want deeper brain analysis, brain volumetry can be booked as an add-on to Core and Advanced (it's included in Pro). This AI-assisted analysis measures the volume of specific brain regions, which can be an early indicator for neurodegenerative conditions.

If you're specifically concerned about a neurological condition and need a targeted diagnostic head MRI (e.g. with contrast dye), we recommend consulting your GP or neurologist, who can refer you for a clinical MRI at a hospital or radiology practice.

Question 18

What is the difference between MRI and CT at Ahead?

Accepted Answer

We offer both MRI and CT, but they serve different purposes and work very differently:

Full-body MRI (included in all packages):

Uses magnetic fields and radio waves, with no radiation and no contrast dye
Scans soft tissues, organs, brain, spine, and joints in detail
Takes 45–80 minutes depending on the package
Ideal for spotting tumors, organ abnormalities, disc herniations, and structural changes

Heart CT / calcium scoring (optional add-on):

Uses a very low dose of X-ray radiation (comparable to 1–2 days of natural background radiation)
Specifically measures calcium deposits in the coronary arteries (the blood vessels that supply the heart)
Takes about 15 minutes
Gives you an Agatston calcium score, a well-established predictor of heart attack risk
No contrast dye is used

The MRI cannot see calcium deposits in blood vessels, and the CT cannot provide the soft-tissue detail of an MRI. They're complementary: the most comprehensive cardiovascular assessment combines the MRI (heart structure) with the heart CT (coronary artery calcification) and the blood panel (cholesterol, ApoB, hs-CRP).

Question 19

What exact body parts does the MRI cover?

Accepted Answer

The MRI scans from head to pelvis (not head to toe: feet, lower legs, and hands are not included). Here's what each package covers:

Core: brain, spine (cervical, thoracic, lumbar), neck, chest (lungs, heart), abdomen (liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, adrenal glands), and pelvis (bladder, reproductive organs).
Advanced: everything in Core, plus prostate (men) or endometrium/uterus (women), body composition analysis (fat and muscle distribution), and spine muscle assessment.
Pro: everything in Advanced, plus brain volumetry (AI-measured brain region volumes), hips (labrum, cartilage, joint structure), and knees (meniscus, ligaments, cartilage).

Our MRI does not cover arms, hands, lower legs below the knee, or feet. If you need imaging of extremities, your GP can refer you for a targeted MRI.

Question 20

Can the MRI detect early signs of Alzheimer's or other neurological conditions?

Accepted Answer

Our full-body MRI includes a brain scan that may detect structural abnormalities such as tumors, cysts, vascular malformations, signs of previous strokes, and unusual changes in brain tissue.

For deeper neurological insight, brain volumetry can be booked as an add-on to any package (included in Pro). This AI-assisted analysis measures the volume of specific brain regions. Significant deviation from age-matched norms in areas like the hippocampus can be an early indicator of neurodegenerative processes, including Alzheimer's disease. However, brain volumetry alone cannot diagnose Alzheimer's: it identifies changes that may warrant further investigation by a neurologist.

Important limitations:

MRI cannot detect amyloid plaques or tau tangles (the hallmark proteins of Alzheimer's), which require PET imaging or cerebrospinal fluid analysis
Early-stage neurodegenerative diseases may not yet show visible structural changes on MRI
A normal MRI result does not rule out neurological conditions

Question 21

Can you detect heart disease?

Accepted Answer

Our screening gives you a preventive overview of cardiovascular health rather than a full functional cardiac workup — we assess the heart's structure and a focused set of risk markers, not its performance under load (no stress test, echocardiogram, or continuous ECG). Within those limits, it may detect signs of heart disease from several angles:

MRI (all packages): examines the heart's structure, size, and surrounding vessels. May reveal cardiomegaly (enlarged heart), pericardial effusion, aortic aneurysms, and structural abnormalities.
Heart CT calcium scoring (add-on): measures calcium deposits in the coronary arteries. The Agatston score is one of the strongest predictors of heart attack risk.
Blood panel (Advanced, Pro, or Advanced blood test): includes key cardiovascular markers such as Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides, ApoB, and hs-CRP.

The combination of imaging + blood work + calcium scoring provides one of the most comprehensive preventive cardiovascular assessments available outside a hospital setting.

Our screening is not a stress test and does not replace a cardiologist evaluation if you have active symptoms (chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations). If you're experiencing symptoms, please see a cardiologist first.

Question 22

Do you screen for stomach or intestinal issues?

Accepted Answer

Our MRI scans the abdominal organs (liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, adrenal glands) and may detect structural abnormalities in these areas, including masses, cysts, and organ enlargement.

However, MRI has significant limitations for the stomach and intestines: it cannot see inside the stomach or bowel the way an endoscopy or colonoscopy can. Surface-level conditions like ulcers, polyps, or early mucosal changes are generally not visible.

What our MRI may detect in the abdomen:

Liver lesions, fatty liver, or cirrhosis
Kidney masses or cysts
Pancreatic abnormalities
Enlarged lymph nodes
Large abdominal masses

What it cannot reliably detect:

Stomach or colon polyps
Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's, colitis) in early stages
Gastric ulcers or gastritis
Colon cancer in early stages (colonoscopy is the gold standard)

If you have digestive symptoms or a family history of colorectal cancer, we recommend discussing screening colonoscopy with your GP. Our screening is complementary, not a replacement for gastroenterological evaluation.

Question 23

Can you detect prostate cancer or prostate enlargement?

Accepted Answer

Our screening may detect signs of prostate enlargement or prostate cancer, with some important nuances.

MRI (Advanced and Pro packages, or as a Core add-on via Gender health imaging): the prostate is included in the pelvic MRI and may reveal enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH), suspicious lesions, and structural abnormalities. Our screening uses a bi-parametric prostate MRI (bpMRI) protocol — in comparative studies, bpMRI has been shown to detect clinically significant prostate cancer with accuracy comparable to the more extensive multiparametric MRI (mpMRI), with the added benefit of no contrast agent. A dedicated mpMRI remains the standard for targeted diagnostic work-up when a suspicious finding needs further investigation.

PSA (prostate-specific antigen) is included in the Pro package and can also be added as a single-marker add-on on request. Elevated PSA can indicate BPH, inflammation, or cancer, but PSA alone cannot distinguish between these conditions.

Question 24

Can you detect breast cancer? How does your MRI compare to mammography?

Accepted Answer

Our Mamma MRI add-on may detect breast cancer by scanning both breasts using contrast-enhanced MRI. This is different from the standard full-body MRI.

Mamma MRI vs. mammography:

MRI is more sensitive: it may detect cancers that mammography misses, particularly in dense breast tissue
MRI uses no radiation (unlike mammography, which uses low-dose X-rays)
MRI requires a contrast agent (gadolinium-based dye), which is injected intravenously during the scan
MRI has a higher false-positive rate: it may flag findings that turn out to be benign
Mammography remains the standard screening tool recommended by Swiss guidelines for women aged 50+

The full-body MRI (without the Mamma add-on) covers the chest area but does not provide the detailed breast-specific imaging needed for breast cancer screening.

Our Mamma MRI is particularly valuable for women with dense breast tissue, a family history of breast cancer, or known genetic risk (BRCA1/BRCA2).

Question 25

Can you detect thyroid problems?

Accepted Answer

Yes, our blood work may detect thyroid dysfunction.

The Advanced blood test (included in Advanced and Pro packages, or bookable standalone) includes a full thyroid panel: TSH, free T3 (fT3), and free T4 (fT4). These markers may reveal hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, or subclinical thyroid dysfunction (early imbalances before symptoms appear).

However, we do not currently test anti-TPO or anti-thyroglobulin antibodies, which are needed to diagnose autoimmune thyroid conditions like Hashimoto's thyroiditis or Graves' disease. If your thyroid hormone levels come back abnormal, your GP can order antibody tests as a follow-up.

Our MRI does not specifically assess the thyroid gland. The neck is included in the scan, so large structural abnormalities might be incidentally detected, but dedicated thyroid imaging requires an ultrasound.

Question 26

Can you detect lung cancer?

Accepted Answer

Our full-body MRI includes the chest and may detect lung masses, lung nodules, and other chest abnormalities.

When a finding is identified, we classify it using the ONCO-RADS system (Oncologically Relevant Findings Reporting and Data System), a standardized scale from 1 to 5 that categorizes findings by the likelihood of clinical significance:

ONCO-RADS 1–2: normal or almost certainly benign, no action needed
ONCO-RADS 3: probably benign, may warrant follow-up imaging in 6–12 months
ONCO-RADS 4–5: suspicious or likely significant, our medical team will discuss the findings with you and guide you on next steps, including referral to a pulmonologist or other specialist

This classification helps ensure that every finding is communicated clearly and acted on appropriately.

That said, MRI is not the primary screening tool for lung cancer. Low-dose CT is the gold standard, particularly for high-risk individuals (smokers or former smokers). CT provides sharper images of lung tissue and is better at detecting very small nodules. A dedicated lung CT can also be arranged on request.

Question 27

Can you detect colon cancer?

Accepted Answer

Our MRI scans the abdominal and pelvic region, which means large colorectal masses may be visible as incidental findings. However, MRI is not a reliable screening tool for colon cancer, especially in early stages.

The gold standard for colon cancer screening is a colonoscopy, which allows direct visualization of the bowel lining and removal of precancerous polyps. Small polyps and early-stage mucosal changes are generally not visible on MRI due to bowel movement and gas artifacts.

If you're over 50 or have a family history of colorectal cancer, we strongly recommend discussing screening colonoscopy with your GP. Our screening is complementary and may catch advanced disease, but it's not a substitute for colonoscopy.

Question 28

Can you detect pancreatic cancer?

Accepted Answer

Our full-body MRI includes detailed imaging of the abdomen, including the pancreas, and may detect pancreatic masses, cysts, and structural abnormalities.

However, early-stage pancreatic cancer is notoriously difficult to detect with any imaging modality. Small tumors may not be visible, and MRI has limitations in this area.

What our screening may reveal:

Pancreatic masses or tumors above a certain size
Pancreatic cysts (which may be precancerous or benign)
Dilation of the pancreatic duct
Abnormalities in surrounding structures

If you have a strong family history of pancreatic cancer or known genetic risk factors (BRCA2, PALB2, familial pancreatitis), specialized surveillance programs with dedicated MRI protocols and endoscopic ultrasound may be more appropriate. Our physicians can discuss this with you.

Question 29

Can you detect endometrial or gynecological cancers?

Accepted Answer

Our full-body MRI includes the pelvic region and may detect structural abnormalities of the uterus and ovaries, including masses, cysts, and fibroids.

The Advanced and Pro packages (or the Gender health add-on for Core) include a dedicated endometrium-focused MRI sequence — the female equivalent of the bi-parametric prostate MRI we use for men. It's optimised for the uterus and endometrial lining, with the ovaries covered alongside.

What our MRI may reveal:

Ovarian cysts and masses
Uterine fibroids
Large endometrial abnormalities
Structural changes in the reproductive organs

What it cannot reliably detect:

Can you screen for osteoporosis?

Accepted Answer

Yes, our DEXA scan add-on is specifically designed to assess bone health.

DEXA (Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry) measures your bone mineral density (BMD) at the spine and hip, the gold standard test for diagnosing osteoporosis and osteopenia (low bone density). It also provides a comprehensive body composition analysis showing your distribution of bone, muscle, and fat.

The DEXA scan uses a very low dose of radiation (about 0.001 mSv, roughly 1/100th of a chest X-ray).

Our full-body MRI can detect advanced bone changes (fractures, lesions, severe degeneration), but it cannot measure bone density. MRI and DEXA are complementary: MRI shows structural bone problems, DEXA measures bone strength.

The DEXA scan is particularly valuable for women over 50 (post-menopausal bone loss), anyone with a family history of osteoporosis, people on long-term corticosteroid therapy, and athletes who want precise body composition data.

Can your MRI detect muscle or joint issues?

Accepted Answer

Yes, depending on the package.

All packages (Core, Advanced, Pro) include the spine, which may reveal disc herniations, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, and muscle/ligament abnormalities in the back.

The Advanced and Pro packages include body composition and spine muscle assessment, which may identify muscle imbalances and atrophy. Body composition can also be added to Core as an add-on.

The Pro package additionally covers hips and knees, which may reveal meniscus tears, ligament damage (ACL, MCL), cartilage wear and early osteoarthritis, labral tears in the hip, bone marrow edema, and tendinopathy.

Limitations: shoulders, elbows, wrists, ankles, and feet are not covered by any package. For a specific injury or pain in a joint, a targeted diagnostic MRI (ordered by your GP or orthopedic surgeon) may provide more detailed imaging with specialized sequences.

I have a chronic condition — can your screening help monitor it?

Accepted Answer

Our screening is primarily designed for preventive health checks in individuals without acute symptoms. However, it can be a useful complement to your ongoing care for certain chronic conditions.

Conditions where our screening adds value:

Cardiovascular risk factors: our blood panel tracks key markers, and the heart CT provides a snapshot of coronary artery health
Diabetes / pre-diabetes: HbA1c, fasting glucose, insulin, and HOMA-IR are all included in the Advanced blood test
Thyroid conditions: TSH, fT3, and fT4 for ongoing monitoring
Family history of cancer: regular MRI screening can complement your specialist's surveillance plan
Musculoskeletal conditions: the Pro package covers spine, hips, and knees
