Q: Can I be scanned with metal implants / pacemaker / IUD / braces / during pregnancy?

Metal Implants & Devices : Most modern orthopedic implants (like hip or knee replacements) and copper IUDs are MRI-safe. However, devices like pacemakers, defibrillators, or certain neurostimulators are generally not MRI-safe unless they are specifically labeled as "MR-conditional." We conduct a thorough pre-screening for every implanted device. Dental braces are usually okay but may cause some image distortion around the jaw area only. Pregnancy : Elective preventive MRI scans are generally postponed until after pregnancy. Specifically, MRI is a relative contra-indication during the first trimester. Breastfeeding is fine and does not interfere with the scan.

Is the MRI scan performed with contrast agents or radiation?

The full-body MRI scan included in the Ahead check-up is performed without the use of contrast agents and is radiation-free.

If you opt for certain additional specific tests, these may involve a very low dose of radiation or contrast agents.

I have claustrophobia. Are the MRI machines suitable?

We use modern Siemens Vida 3T MRI scanners with a wide bore (70cm in diameter) to enhance comfort.

These machines can accommodate individuals up to 200 kg.

To help ease claustrophobia, we offer mirror goggles that allow you to see outside the scanner, and you can watch a soothing video or images. We also provide a breathing script to guide you during your scan.

The MRI scan itself takes about 30-35 minutes. If you have significant concerns about claustrophobia, light sedation with a nose spray can be arranged for an additional fee of CHF 80; however, if you opt for sedation, you must have an escort to accompany you home and you cannot drive a vehicle for 24 hours.

Currently, we do not offer open or upright MRI options, but this is something we are considering for the future.

Are there any side effects from the full-body MRI?

Since the full-body MRIs are radiation-free and do not use contrast agents, there are no known side effects associated with the check-ups themselves.

Question 6

Is the heart CT (calcium scoring) harmful? Does it involve radiation?

Accepted Answer

The heart CT does involve a very small dose of ionizing radiation, but the level is extremely low, typically around 0.5–1 mSv. That's comparable to about 1–2 days of natural background radiation or a return flight from Zurich to New York.

For context: the annual natural background radiation in Switzerland is approximately 5.5 mSv. A standard diagnostic chest CT delivers 5–7 mSv, roughly 5–10 times more than our calcium scoring scan.

No contrast dye is used for the heart CT. The scan takes about 15 minutes and is painless.

The calcium score (Agatston score) is one of the most well-validated predictors of cardiovascular risk and is recommended by major cardiology guidelines for intermediate-risk patients. For most people, the small radiation exposure is far outweighed by the benefit of knowing their coronary artery calcification status.

Question 7

Do you offer screenings for children?

No. Our check-ups are designed for adults aged 18–80. We do not currently offer screenings for children or adolescents.

MRI is generally safe for children, but our screening protocols, reference ranges, and reporting are calibrated for adult physiology. Pediatric imaging requires specialized expertise, child-sized equipment settings, and often sedation for younger children, none of which our screening is set up to provide.

If you're concerned about your child's health, we recommend consulting your pediatrician, who can refer for appropriate diagnostic imaging if needed.
